The Fours: holding steady
Every Four is a kind of stability. Learn the four Fours as celebration, apathy, rest and security, and why the Four of Cups misses the offer held out to it.
In this lesson you will
- Describe what the four Fours share and what each suit adds.
- Explain how the Four of Cups turns stability into apathy.
- Tell the Four of Cups from the Four of Swords when someone withdraws.
- Read two Fours together in a short reading.
A lease signed, savings finally growing, a long weekend after a hard project, a relationship settled into its routine: some seasons are about holding steady. The four Fours show what stability can look like, and where it goes wrong.
The idea of Four
In The numbers, Ace to Ten, as one story the Four was the stage of structure, stability and rest. What grew in the Three now gets walls and a floor: four corners make a shape that can stand. A Four is a time to consolidate, to enjoy or protect what you have, or to stop and recover.
So a Four asks how you hold what is settled. The suit tells you which kind of stability it is, and one Four, in Cups, shows stability gone stale.
| Four | Element | Stability in this suit |
|---|---|---|
| Wands | Fire | Celebration: a milestone reached and shared |
| Cups | Water | Apathy: settled feelings gone flat |
| Swords | Air | Rest: the mind laid down to recover |
| Pentacles | Earth | Security: holding on to what you have |
