The Nines: the last stretch
Nine is near completion: fruition, resilience and self-sufficiency. Learn the four Nines, why the Nine of Swords shows worry, and how to read two Nines together.
In this lesson you will
- Describe the idea of Nine and how each suit lives the last stretch.
- Read the Nine of Swords gently, as a state of mind and not a verdict.
- Tell the Nine of Cups from the Ten of Cups in a reading about happiness.
- Read two Nines together in a short reading.
The last month of a long project, the final weeks of training, a wish that has almost come true: you are nearly there. The four Nines describe that last stretch, and each suit lives it differently.
The idea of Nine
In The numbers, Ace to Ten, as one story you met the Nine as near completion: the story of the suit is almost told. What was built can now be enjoyed, or must be defended a little longer. Every Nine shows a single figure: self-sufficiency, resilience, the reward of your own effort.
So predict each Nine as the last stretch in its suit's area of life. Three Nines show something won and held. The fourth, in Swords, shows what the last stretch can feel like at night.
| Nine | Element | The last stretch in this suit |
|---|---|---|
| Wands | Fire | Resilience: tired, but still standing guard |
| Cups | Water | A wish fulfilled: contentment and pleasure |
| Swords | Air | Worry: the mind at its most anxious |
| Pentacles | Earth | Self-sufficiency: enjoying what you have grown |
