The numbers, Ace to Ten, as one story
The ten numbers of the Minor Arcana tell one story, from seed to completion. Combine a number with a suit and you can predict a card before you look it up.
In this lesson you will
- Tell the arc of the numbers from Ace to Ten.
- Predict a numbered card's theme from its suit and number.
- Explain why the arc is a guide with exceptions, not a rule.
You know the four suits, and there are 40 numbered cards. Learning 40 meanings one by one sounds like a lot of memorizing. It isn't, because the numbers tell the same story in every suit.
One story in ten steps
Read the numbers from Ace to Ten as the life of anything you start: a friendship, a project, a habit. Each number is one stage of that life.
| Number | Stage |
|---|---|
| Ace (1) | Seed: a pure beginning, a gift |
| Two | Choice, balance, a first meeting |
| Three | Growth and expression |
| Four | Structure, stability, rest |
| Five | Challenge, conflict, loss |
| Six | Exchange, harmony after difficulty |
| Seven | Assessment, strategy, testing |
| Eight | Movement and mastery |
| Nine | Near completion |
| Ten | Completion, sometimes excess |
Now combine the stage with the suit's area of life from The four suits and their elements. A Five is a challenge; in Cups, the suit of feelings, it is a challenge of the heart, such as a loss. That is the whole method, and it works for all 40 cards.
Warm up
A quick look back before the new material. Recalling helps you remember.
Warm-up
The Ace of Cups belongs to the suit of Cups. Which area of life does that suit traditionally describe?
Warm-up
Your daily card is the Three of Swords, a heart pierced by three swords under rain, and your stomach drops. What is the most useful thing to do?
Look first

Look at these three Cups cards, in this order, before reading on. What story do they tell together?
Remember
- The numbers tell one story: seed, choice, growth, structure, challenge, harmony, assessment, movement, near completion, completion.
- Number plus suit predicts a numbered card: a Five in Cups is a loss of the heart.
- The arc is a first guess; check it against the picture, which always has the last word.
