The Fool and the Magician
Two ways to begin: The Fool's leap into the unknown and The Magician's skill with what is already in hand, read from their pictures, across their range and against the cards they are confused with.
In this lesson you will
- Recognize The Fool and The Magician from their key symbols.
- Read each card across its range, upright and reversed, in love, work, self and money.
- Tell The Fool from the Page of Wands and The Magician from the Ace of Wands.
You have an idea you keep coming back to: a class to join, a shop to open, a first message to someone you like. Two Majors stand at the start of every such story, and they ask different things of you.
Two ways to begin
The Fool, numbered 0, is the leap: stepping toward something new before you know how it will go. The Magician, numbered I, is the making: gathering what you already have and turning an intention into something real.
Most beginnings need both. The Fool without the Magician can stay a lovely daydream, or a jump without a plan. The Magician without the Fool can keep polishing the tools and never set out.
So when one of them appears, ask which half of the beginning it is pointing to: the courage to start, or the skill to make it work. This lesson teaches both cards from their pictures, their range from light to shadow, and the cards they are most often mistaken for.
Warm up
A quick look back before the new material. Recalling helps you remember.
Warm-up
You are leaving a long-held job to open your own studio: excited, a little scared and without a clear map. Which Major best fits this turning point?
Warm-up
The Page of Wands appears in the Advice position for “How can I make friends in a new city?” Which reading fits that position?
Look first

Look at both cards before reading on. One figure is moving and one is standing still. What is each of them about to do?
Remember
- The Fool (0) is the leap: trust and curiosity before the map exists; its shadow is leaping without looking.
- The Magician (I) is the making: the tools are on the table, and will and focus put them to work; its shadow is skill used to manipulate.
- The Fool is a life-scale leap where the Page of Wands is curiosity in one area; the Magician is skill applied where the Ace of Wands is a spark offered.
