Positions: the same card, different jobs
Why the same card says different things in different positions, the position families most spreads are built from, and how to read a bright card in a hard place.
In this lesson you will
- Turn any position into the question it asks before you read the card in it.
- Name the position families most spreads are built from.
- Read a bright card in a difficult position, and a hard card in a helpful one.
Last month the Eight of Cups came up as your Advice when you asked about a job that had stopped meaning anything. This week a friend draws the same card as the Obstacle in a question about their relationship. Should it say the same thing to both of you?
Every position is a question
A position is not a label stuck on a card. It is a question, and the card is the answer. Situation asks where things stand, Obstacle asks what is in the way, and Advice asks what might help. Read the card as the answer to that question, and one picture can say three different things.
Spreads look endless, but most are built from a few families of positions:
- Situation and Past: where things stand, and what they grew from.
- Self and Others: your part, and the people or conditions you meet.
- Obstacle and Resources: what is in the way, and what is already on your side.
- Advice: what might help, or a way to act.
- Outcome: where things are heading if nothing changes.
Learn the families and a new spread stops being something to memorize. You only ask which family each position belongs to, and what it wants to know.
Warm up
A quick look back before the new material. Recalling helps you remember.
Warm-up
In a Situation, Obstacle, Advice reading for “How can I finish my thesis?”, the Four of Swords lands in the Obstacle position. Which reading fits that position?
Warm-up
In a Situation, Obstacle, Advice reading about a side project that has stalled for months, the Ace of Wands lands in the Obstacle position. Which reading fits best?
Warm-up
The Wheel of Fortune appears upright twice: in the Present position of one reading and the Future position of another. Which pair of readings fits both positions?
Look first

Look at the Eight of Cups before reading on. The figure is doing one clear thing. In what situation would that be wise, and in what situation would it be a mistake?
Remember
- A position is a question; read the card as its answer.
- Helpful positions draw out a card's light side; difficult ones show its shadow or excess.
- The Outcome shows where things are heading if nothing changes, not a fixed fate.
