The choice spread in depth
Set up and read the choice spread (二者択一) with care: two paths named before you shuffle, each side read as its own story, then compared row by row against what you value.
In this lesson you will
- Set up a choice spread with two named paths, a time frame for soon and a short list of what you value.
- Read position 1 as you at the choice, and each side from the bottom up as its own story.
- Compare the two sides row by row and against your values, without turning the spread into a score.
Your mother has asked whether you might move back to your hometown, near her and your old friends. You also love the life you have built in the city. You lay out five cards for Move back (A) or stay (B)?, and the first thing you notice is the card you hoped would land on your side.
Set up the two sides before you shuffle
Small spreads introduced the five-card choice spread. Reading it well starts before the first card is turned, with three small decisions you write down:
- Name each option as a path you would walk, such as move back next spring, and write down which is A and which is B.
- Decide what soon covers, such as the next three months, so that positions 2 and 3 mean the same on both sides.
- Write the three things that matter most to you in this choice, as in Decision questions within your reach.
With the sides named and your values on paper, the spread can show what each road holds. The weighing stays with you.
