Reversals: choose one method
Whether to read reversed cards at all, the five main families of method, and why choosing one and keeping it matters more than which one you choose.
In this lesson you will
- Decide whether to read reversals, knowing that reading upright only is a valid choice.
- Name the five main families of reversal method and recognize each in a reading.
- Choose one method before drawing and apply it to every reversed card.
Your reading shows the Three of Pentacles upside down, and you stop: is it the opposite of teamwork, a weaker version, or teamwork that comes later? One book says one thing, an app another. Without a method, every reversed card becomes a guess, and the guess tends to lean toward whatever you fear.
First choice: reversals or not
You do not have to read reversals. Many readers keep every card upright and draw on each card's full range, its light and its shadow, which already holds most of what a reversal would say. Others find that a reversed card adds a useful second voice. Both are sound practice; what matters is that you choose.
Many teachers advise beginners to start with upright cards only and add reversals later. That is a sound path, and you can take it here: you can return to this lesson whenever you are ready.
If you read upright only, read each card by its upright meaning and its shadow, whichever way it falls in a VeilSoul draw. When you enter a draw from your own deck, you mark each card upright or reversed yourself, so you can simply turn every card upright.
If you do read reversals, the rest of this lesson gives you the main methods and one rule: pick one method before you draw, and keep it.
Warm up
A quick look back before the new material. Recalling helps you remember.
Warm-up
With reversals turned on, The Star appears reversed in the Advice position. Following this lesson's sidebar, what is a sound first reading?
Warm-up
Finish the friendship reading: Situation, Queen of Cups reversed; Advice, Queen of Swords. Which sentence completes it?

Finish the online-course reading: Situation, Page of Wands; Advice, Page of Pentacles reversed. Which sentence completes it?
Look first

Look at this card upright first. Then picture it upside down. What changes in the picture, and what changes only in how you feel about it?
Remember
- Reading upright only is a valid choice; each card's light and shadow already carry much of what a reversal says.
- Reversal methods fall into five families: blocked, inward, delayed, too much or too little, and opposite.
- Choose one method before you draw and apply it to every reversed card, with the card page's reversed reading as your anchor.
