The Pages: learning and first news
The four Pages as the court's learners and messengers: what each one studies, how a Page reads in a spread, and how the Page of Wands differs from The Fool.
In this lesson you will
- Describe each Page from its rank and suit, and recognize it by its scene.
- Read a Page as a learner, a message or a first step, depending on its position.
- Tell the Page of Wands from The Fool in a reading about a new beginning.
You have just signed up for an evening class, and a reading about it turns up a Page. That fits: Pages are the beginners of the court. They do not know much yet, but they pay close attention, and that is their strength.
What a Page adds
In the court family, the Page is the rank of learning. A Page holds the symbol of the suit and studies it, or carries it like a message. In a reading, a Page can be a student, a piece of news, or the first curious step into something new.
Each suit gives the Page a different subject. The Page of Wands is curious about a new interest, the Page of Cups about a feeling or an image, the Page of Swords about the facts, and the Page of Pentacles about a practical skill. Every one of these beginnings is small, which is why Pages ask for patience as well as enthusiasm.
| Card | Studies | Brings to a reading |
|---|---|---|
| Page of Wands | A new interest or plan | Enthusiasm, exciting news |
| Page of Cups | A feeling or an image | An intuitive idea, a tender message |
| Page of Swords | The facts | Questions, vigilance, news to check |
| Page of Pentacles | A practical skill | Study, a first practical chance |
Warm up
A quick look back before the new material. Recalling helps you remember.
Warm-up
Without looking it up, combine rank and suit: what would the Page of Pentacles most likely describe?
Warm-up
The Page of Wands appears in the Advice position for “How can I make friends in a new city?” Which reading fits that position?
Warm-up
You are leaving a long-held job to open your own studio: excited, a little scared and without a clear map. Which Major best fits this turning point?
Look first

Look at three of the Pages before reading on. Each one is paying attention to something. What is each one looking at, and which seems most on guard?
Remember
- A Page is the court's learner: curious, attentive and at the start of something.
- The suit names the subject: a spark (Wands), a feeling (Cups), the facts (Swords), a practical skill (Pentacles).
- The Fool leaps into a new chapter; the Page of Wands explores one new interest within your life.
