What they want is the freedom to find out. The Fool points to someone who hopes this stays open, unlabelled, alive with possibility, and who means that as affection rather than avoidance. It is genuine and it is also unbuilt. If you need a shape, you will have to be the one who names it.

Reversed

Reversed, the wish for freedom has turned into a reluctance to decide anything. They want this to continue without the cost of choosing it, which keeps every option warm and none of them real. A gentle deadline is not a threat here. It is the only thing that makes the want visible.

Upright

They want to make something with you, not just be with you. The Magician points to a person whose affection shows up as projects: a trip planned, a business idea, your problem treated as theirs to solve. Being wanted this way feels practical rather than romantic, and it is one of the more durable forms.

Reversed

Reversed, the wanting is all in the telling. Plans are described with real feeling and rarely survive contact with a calendar, and they may believe every word as they say it. Judge this by what has actually been booked, paid for or told to somebody else.

Upright

They want structure: clear terms, known roles, a relationship that can be relied on like a schedule. The Emperor says security is the form their care takes, and that they will express it by providing rather than by confiding. Ask for the words too. Structure without them gets lonely in a way that is hard to explain.

Reversed

Reversed, the wish for control has outgrown the wish for closeness. What they want is a relationship that does not surprise them, and that can quietly mean one where you adjust more than they do. Notice who changes plans when the two of you disagree, and how often.

Upright

They want this to move. The Chariot describes someone for whom a relationship that is not going somewhere stops feeling like one, so expect pressure toward the next visible step rather than patience. Their drive is real. Whether the direction was ever agreed with you is the question worth raising.

Reversed

Reversed, they want momentum and cannot find the wheel. Two things they care about pull in opposite directions - a career and a city, family and you - and the relationship stalls while neither is resolved. This is not a comment on how much they want you. It is a comment on what else they want.

Upright

What they want is to be met gently. Strength points to someone who hopes this becomes the place where they do not have to be impressive, where a bad month is allowed. They will not ask for that directly. They will test it by letting one unflattering thing show and watching what you do.

Reversed

Reversed, they want the closeness and are bracing against it. Every time this gets warmer, something in them pulls back a little, usually after a moment where they felt exposed. Patience helps and it is not unlimited. Say what you need out loud, then decide how long you can wait.

Upright

They want to know where this goes before they commit to it. The Two of Wands describes someone standing with a map, weighing this against a move, a job, a version of their life they have not given up on. Wanting you and wanting to be sure are happening at the same time.

Reversed

Reversed, the planning has become a place to hide. Every time the next step comes close, a new consideration appears that needs thinking about first. At some point the deliberation is the answer. You get to decide how many more seasons you are willing to spend inside it.

Upright

They want something and cannot say what. The Four of Cups describes a person who is not unhappy with you and is not reaching either, sitting in a flatness that has more to do with their own life than with this. What they want from you right now is mostly to be left the room to feel it.

Reversed

Reversed, the fog is lifting and they are starting to want something specific again. Interest returns unevenly at this stage, so you may get a burst of attention and then a quiet week. Respond to the pattern over a month, not to the burst.

Upright

They want this to be the good part of their life. The Nine of Cups describes someone who imagines you as the reward rather than the project: the person they come back to after the day. It is affectionate and a little self-centred. Check that the wish includes your day as well.

Reversed

Reversed, they want the feeling this gives them more than they want you specifically. Comfort, admiration, somewhere to be understood: those are real needs and they can be met by more than one person. The test is whether they are curious about your life when it has nothing to do with them.

Upright

They want something they can be steady inside. The King of Cups points to a person who hopes for a relationship where feelings are handled well rather than avoided or performed, and who quietly wants to be the one you bring difficult news to. Give them something real to hold and the wish becomes visible.

Reversed

Reversed, they want calm badly enough to keep things shallow. Conflict is smoothed over before it can be understood, and what looks like maturity is a preference for never being upset in front of you. You may have to be the one who lets a conversation stay uncomfortable.

Upright

They want the truth of this settled, quickly. The Knight of Swords describes someone who would rather have a hard answer now than a comfortable ambiguity for another season, and who may force the question at an awkward moment. Meet the directness with directness. Hedging is what they cannot tolerate.

Reversed

Reversed, the urgency has turned into pressure without a destination. They push for answers and go vague when asked what they are actually proposing. Ask for the specific thing they want: a title, a plan, a date. If none of it can be named, the hurry is about anxiety rather than about you.

Upright

They want to build, and they want to start small. The Ace of Pentacles points to a wish for something concrete: a key, a shared expense, a weekend that repeats. It is a modest opening and a serious one. Turning it down as unromantic can close a door they will not open twice.

Reversed

Reversed, the wish is there and the ground is not ready. Money, housing or work makes the practical step they want impossible right now, and they may be embarrassed enough about it to say nothing. Silence about the future is not always coldness. Sometimes it is a person without an answer.

Upright

They are thinking further ahead than they have told you. The Ten of Pentacles points to a wish that involves families meeting, a home with both names on something, years rather than months. People who want this rarely say it early, because saying it early has cost them before.

Reversed

Reversed, what they want from this is partly what it would settle. Family expectation, a living situation, a question of standing: the relationship is being asked to solve something practical as well as to be loved. That does not cancel the affection. It does mean the timing belongs to somebody else too.
